Why accessibility matters at Fresh Nous

Accessibility is core to how we show up. We love different, celebrating diverse perspectives and making sure every voice can be heard. We’re in it together, removing barriers so more people can discover, use and benefit from our content and services. And we stay one step ahead, continually improving as standards and user needs evolve.

Our tone and content principles also commit us to being clear, digestible and accessible, avoiding jargon and writing for real people.

Our commitment & standards

We aim for WCAG 2.2 Level AA conformance across freshnous.com. Where feasible, we strive for AAA on core reading experiences such as long-form articles and key calls to action. Our brand standards already require body copy on the website and emails to meet WCAG AA or AAA contrast guidelines, and we design accordingly.

We design and operate this site in line with the spirit of the Equality Act 2010 (UK), which requires reasonable adjustments and protection from discrimination for disabled people.

How we design and build for accessibility

We apply the following practices throughout design, content, and development:

  • Clear language & structure – plain English, descriptive headings, and meaningful link text; we avoid unexplained acronyms and keep copy concise and “digestible”.

  • Colour & contrast – colour palettes are chosen and paired to ensure legibility, meeting or exceeding WCAG AA contrast; we avoid problematic combinations from our brand set.

  • Keyboard support – all interactive components are reachable and operable with a keyboard, including visible focus states.

  • Semantic HTML & ARIA – proper landmarks (header, nav, main, footer), labels, and ARIA roles where needed—used sparingly and correctly.

  • Responsive and reflow – layouts adapt without loss of content or functionality on small screens and up to 400% zoom.

  • Media alternatives – alt text for meaningful images; transcripts or captions for time-based media.

  • Forms – explicit labels, helpful error messages, and minimal required fields.

  • Motion & flashing – reduced motion respected; no content flashes more than three times per second.

  • Third-party content – where we embed third-party widgets, we select accessible options and provide alternatives where possible.

What we’re working on

We review the site regularly and prioritise improvements that deliver the biggest impact. Our culture encourages asking the “so what?”—we focus on changes that make the experience clearer, faster, and fairer for users.

If we identify any pages or components that do not fully meet WCAG 2.2 AA, we log them, add a remediation plan, and track through to completion as part of our continuous improvement approach. This fits our operating style of staying ahead of issues and turning challenges into opportunities.

Testing & governance

  • Design checks: colour and type checked against brand rules and WCAG contrast.

  • Content checks: plain-language reviews aligned to our tone of voice and writing rules.

  • Technical checks: a blend of automated audits and manual testing with keyboard and screen readers on modern browsers and devices.

  • Release process: new features and templates are reviewed by at least one team member before going live (our “golden rule” of second-pair-of-eyes).

  • Review cadence: formal review at least annually, or when we make significant changes to site structure or technology.
